I struggled through one ugly year of totally out of control symptoms: acne, belly fat, constant fatigue, depression and high cholesterol. I slept all the time, but would wake up feeling exhausted. I kept packing on weight no matter what diet I put myself on. My acne was as painful as it was ugly. I was suffering.

In the winter of 2005, my doctor told me I had PCOS. I immediately went home and spent a few hours on the web trying to figure out how on earth I could make all of these symptoms go away. The information I came across was confusing and not very helpful. I was so upset I drove my car to an empty parking lot in the middle of the night so that I could cry as loud as I wanted.

After that miserable night, I pulled myself together and decided to fight PCOS with everything I had. Fad diets, prescriptions, supplements and 2-hour long workouts were the center of my life. I even brought a frozen diet meal to my grandma's family dinner night so I could keep to my latest nutrition plan! The overexercising aggravated my back injury and I didn't have much time for socializing. 

My symptoms let up and I lost 30 pounds, but my life was still dominated by PCOS. It was extremely hard to stick to this strict way of living! All it took was a busy week at work or emotional stress and I'd give in to a craving and fall back to my bad habits.

I became a personal trainer. Getting certified did not teach me any special secrets, but it did introduce me to a new way of thinking about my health: if you want to be fit for the rest of your life, you have to change your habits and your environment so that staying on track feels easy.

3 Reasons Why Diets Do Not Work For PCOS

A diet does not give you a long-term plan for change. 

Most of the articles and diets written for PCOS women provide accurate information. The problem is that they give you very little direction on how to apply that information to real life. Without that guidance, most of us are just one busy week or one insane craving away from losing our way again.

Working out more and eating less does not work. 

Women living with PCOS must use a more nuanced approach to diet and exercise so that they improve their metabolic and hormonal functioning. 

If you consume less energy (calories) than you use, you will lose fat, but you will also lose muscle mass. Losing that muscle will cause your metabolism to slow down. A slower metabolism will mean that you need to eat even less to lose or maintain your weight. This metabolic slowdown can result in a frustrating plateau in your results. In fact, continually working out more and eating less can make PCOS worse by disrupting your hormones, causing fatigue and increasing stress. 

You need social support.

It is nearly impossible to change your lifestyle without anyone to hold you accountable and encourage you onward. Unfortunately, most women feel isolated by their PCOS and do not reach out for help. They feel like other people don't understand what they are going through.

Every 6 weeks we will start a new workout program. How involved is the accountability schedule? Is there any type of continued support as far as accountability goes? What does it look like?

The online nutrition coaching will focus on developing one healthy habit for two weeks at a time. Every day you will have the opportunity to participate in the habit check-in so that you are accountable to your fellow members and your coach (me.) 

Based on what I’ve read, it seems that you have already covered most of it on your blog...

The blog gives you enough to self-direct and have a basic idea of what you need to do to manage PCOS. However, information is such a small part of the process. Learning how to fit what you learn into your busy life is the key!

Membership gives you MUCH more detailed information, structure, accountability, social support and I will actually coach you through the process. Some members are in contact with me nearly every day!

How much time will this take? 

Good question! Participation in the online community and health coaching program should take about 15 minutes each day Monday-Friday. But I hope you spend extra time online interacting with other members, offering encouragement and sharing your own tips :)

The workout program has flexibility - you can choose to do extra exercise or keep things short and sweet. The workouts take between 15 and 35 minutes a day.

I currently have both of your workout plans and I was wondering are there any similarities or differences from those plans to the workouts in this program? Also, are the exercises suitable for all fitness levels?

First of all you should change your workout about every 6-8 weeks in order to avoid plateaus :) The Fit Revolution workouts will focus on HIIT and strength training just like my books. The videos are more robust because you can do the workouts with me right from your computer and they're designed to be more challenging as you progress through the program.

Sure, I can understand that! The first time I invested in a business coaching program I felt guilty about spending so much money on myself. As it turns out, that investment in myself is how I ended up blogging about PCOS. If something is really important to you, getting a coach is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Will I lose weight?

Yes! But a lot of that will depend on you :) If you follow the weight loss guidelines, 80-90% of the time over the next six months you can expect to lose 10% of your starting body weight. However, many members lose more! Just keep up with your check-ins and daily habits and I'll work tirelessly to help you reach a safe weight loss goal!
